  • [大家開講之作者怎麼說]"It's coming"[補] & X-MEN: LEGACY & X-Men Convention News

10/19 9:41分補
又不是恐怖片....話又說回來,也許是。

Marvel teased "It's coming" before New York Comic Con, and though the actual event didn't provide answers per se, it at least provided some clues.
This image — first revealed at Saturday's "Cup O' Joe" panel and now released to press — certainly suggests something involving the Phoenix force, an entity most closely associated with founding X-Men member Jean Grey, who's been dead in comic book storylines since 2004.
Marvel didn't add any insight to the teaser at the show, but it does look like Jason Aaron, Brian Michael Bendis, Ed Brubaker, Olivier Coipel, Matt Fraction, Jonathan Hickman, Adam Kubert and John Romita Jr. are all involved. Newsarama will keep watching this one as it develops.

  • [大家開講之作者怎麼說]X-Men Convention, X-MEN: PRELUDE to an X-Men Split

With more characters and more soap operatics than any other property in their pantheon, Marvel Comics' X-Men line is jam-packed with comics and fans who have strong opinions on said comics. So for their "Welcome To The X-Men" panel at WonderCon 2011 in San Francisco, the publisher looked to engender some local love with an X-Men variant cover draping the heroes in the colors of hometown heroes the San Francisco Giants. Although more than just opening day fever was expected at the event Saturday afternoon, and CBR News was on hand for all the action.
Marvel staffers including Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso took the stage, as Marvel Talent Coordiantor C.B.Cebulski welcomed the room by declaring the panel one that was slightly hungover but excited to be in San Fran for a fourth year straight of X-Men news. "Wolverine" writer Jason Aaron and "Uncanny X-Force" writer Rick Remender rounded out the group.
Cebulksi ran through a series of slides showing covers for the upcoming X-Men comics including "X-Men First To Last," "New Mutants" and "X-Factor" with much of the information already being public knowledge. The panelists were able to speak to the particulars of their own books. "'What is Archangel?' is the question, and why did Apocalypse put him in Warren Worthington?" Remender said about the incoming arc of of "X-Force" which he said will expand the Apocalypse mythology in terms of the winged character leading to more stories later in the year. "We're going to end up in the Age of Apocalypse [world] as the team tracks something down that's important for [Warren.]"
Aaron spoke "One of the first Wolverine things I did was 'Get Mystique'...and this is pretty much a sequel to that with a huge turning point in the Wolverine/Mystique relationship," said Aaron, promising that after this story fans can expect more stabbing in the book.
The full details of the main book in the "X-Men: Schism" event were then announced – written by Aaron with art over the five issues by Carlos Pacheco, Frank Cho, Adam Kubert, Alan Davis and Daniel Acuña. "Scott Summers coming into his role as leader of the X-Men, and Wolverine as his first officer..when 'Schism' opens, we see these guys as Butch and Sundance, as close as they've been in their long history together. Then something happens...giant robots are involved...and there's a lot of hugging," Aaron said, with the final comment being a gag.
"We've been building to this for years now. Scott has carried a huge burden bringing the mutant race back from the brink of extinction, and there's a huge price to pay for that," said Alonso saying the story would be built upon the increasing militarization of the team over the past several years of stories.
The panel then announced a one-shot called "Wolverine: The Fifth Quarter" written by Food Network star and San Fran native Chef Chris Cosentino and drawn by Tim Seeley. The book will take place in the city with the writer saying, "This will be very food-centric and very much about San Francisco...it's an honor to me being able to actually write a comic book. I loved Wolverine as a kid and would just sit there staring at my hands."
The floor opened to fan questions then with a man wondering if a new X-Men animated series was in the works. Cebulski said there were plans, but more info would be coming at the Marvel Animation panel later in the weekend.
Shifting gears, one reader asked if original Venom Eddie Brock would appear in Remender's "Venom" comic, to which the writer replied. "Yes, there's a lot of connectivity between 'Venom' and upcoming Spider-Man stories...the way that we find Eddie will be surprising."
Some questions about specific characters hit including Bobby Drake and Gambit. "You will most definitely see Iceman in a significant role in the X-Universe in the near future," Aaron said, adding that the plans for the character will explore his past. Remender and Aaron have spent a lot of time talking about the character and how to incorporate him into the line. Cebulski said that Gambit will appear in "X-Men Legacy" as well as Marjorie Liu's "X-23" series.
Local concerns came up with a reader requesting more of San Francisco in the X-Men books since the team is now located in the city. "I want to see my house on panel," he joked with Alonso promising him that he's constantly bugging Nick Lowe to incorporate more of the locales of his hometown into the books.
The characters involved with "Schism" were asked after. "Hope and the Five Lights are a big part of ['Schism'] as well as may of the other students," Aaron said, though the panel confirmed that Jean Grey would not return in the books, though Phoenix fans could see an alternate Jean in the "Age of Apocalypse" arc of "Uncanny X-Force."
"The running theme through all of these characters is that they're damaged...so what they do, they do so their friends don't have to. But there are some membership changes coming up you should look out for," Remender said about the makeup of "Uncanny X-Force."
Alonso spoke to his frequent discussion point of the desire for fans to have stories that count. He said that over the past few years, they've grown the X-Men line more into one major epic that has big twists and turns every few years. "Back when we were planning 'Messiah CompleX,' we kind of sort of saw 'Schism' coming," he explained, noting that characters including Hope, Cable and Bishop will continue to see their interpersonal storylines reverberate throughout the whole X-Men line.
A fan dressed as the villain Stryfe came up asking about Cable's arm that survived the final battle of "Second Coming" and wondering if it portended a return of the character. "Yeah, there's an arm...but we don't bring back characters that much," laughed Alonso, giving a special shout out to a fan dressed as Nightcrawler.
A discussion broke out about how editorial went about bringing back certain characters including the Exiles cast. Cebulski said that there are characters with their fan at Marvel, however the company was loath to just release books with characters fans want if they haven't found a writer with a compelling pitch to make the book work for a broad audience. "Runaways" is a classic example of this, he said.
"The fact of the matter is that the X-Men have had to put their own house in order...struggling for the survival of their species while waiting for this Messiah child to appear," Alonso said, noting that with the "X-Men" monthly was an "exploratory jab" to the fans to see how an X-Men universe working closer to the Marvel U would go over. "We want the X-Men Universe and the Marvel Universe to overlap, and we've wanted that for a while...'Schism' is a first step [in that direction]," the E-i-C later explained.

  • [大家開講之作者怎麼說]X-Men: Prelude to an Split, X-Men Schism - Year of the X-Men, Uncanny X-Men

Two important details came out at the very end of the fifth and final of this week's "MMXI: Year of the X-Men" Marvel Comics conference calls with the press: the fact that the full title of the four-issue, Paul Jenkins-written miniseries starting in May is X-Men: Prelude to Schism. It was previously solicited as just X-Men: Prelude.
The second is the Greg Land-illustrated X-Men: Schism teaser image attached to this article, which strongly suggests the two main players behind the titular divide — Cyclops and Wolverine. (It's a ruby quartz visor cut in three places, after all.)
Rich Johnston of Bleeding Cool reported word from an anonymous source last month that the X-Men were heading towards a split, with one team led by Cyclops and one team led by Wolverine.

  • [大家開講之作者怎麼說]Uncanny X-Force, New Mutants, X-Men

The future of Marvel's X-line continued to roll out today as the focus of the publisher's MMXI relaunch of the books turned towards "Uncanny X-Force." Writer Rick Remender joined the talk with members of the press along with editors Nick Lowe and Jody Leheup, and CBR News was there with all the news on the future of the black ops book.
The team started out by talking about the teaser centering around May's "Uncanny X-Force" #11 (whose cover by Esad Ribic is on the right). "These characters have been off the board for a while...and we wanted to try something a little different with it," Remender said. "It's tricky because we've announced that they're coming up, but we don't want to spoil too much...we have a group of X-Men and X-Force that will go to the Age of Apocalypse world...it's connected to some of the different arcs we've done in the book."
The writer and Lowe said that the Dark Beast character from the original "Age of Apocalypse" series will play a large role not just in the coming arc but the future of "Uncanny X-Force" as a whole. "This is not just a fun 'Age of Apocalypse' story that will have no bearing on the Marvel Universe. It will have a HUGE impact on the 616," Lowe said. "You do run the risk of telling stories that don't matter," Remender added, noting that he wanted to find a story that was worthy of taking the 616 X-Men cast into the world of Apocalypse.
"I think that there are fans out there going 'This is what Marvel always says...that'll it'll change everything!' but this really does change things," Lowe said.
When asked what sets this X-Force team apart from previous versions of the franchise, Remender said that the fact that the team of five heroes can't talk about their missions makes them a unique, true X-Men family. "People who are taking it upon themselves to assassinate the very evil [of the world]...I wanted to take it upon myself to be true to how that plays out."
Apocalypse himself came up, and Remender confirmed "The version of Apocalypse we know is dead," meaning that after the first arc, the classic take on the character is not coming back, but after long talks with his editors, the writer feels that he'll be able to tap into the villain's mythology from his connection to the Celestials through his obsession with evolution and find a real purpose towards an epic story. "The first 17 issues of X-Force is one big story told in five chapters," he said.
"Apocalypse is not the big bad in this story...he's dead. They killed him," said Lowe. "That does have to have meaning in this X-Force book or any death won't mean anything...The other reason this book is so attractive is that it dances on the skinny branches. It takes a lot of risks, and that makes it very enjoyable to me."
"Early on, we wanted to make sure there wasn't a lot of murder," Remender said. "It's an ethical slippery slope...that has to be give the weight it deserves. And beyond the ethical things we deal with, we have momentum on the book. We went through the first six issues and cut out the fat. Everything was boiled down to its core."
Remender reinforced that the long planning on the series has opened him up to seeding small details in a way that brings the book more in line with his work like "Fear Agent" and "The Punisher." Fans who stick with the series will see payoff from the very first issues even as the scribe remains flexible.
"The Age of Apocalypse world will be defined for you. The rules will be defined," Remender said before adding "I never, ever assume that anybody has read another X-book besides this." As the broad story has been built, only pieces introduced within the story will play a key role rather than simply throwing fan favorite concepts into the mix simply to drum up interest.
"Archangel is not there for a reason, and it's a reason you don't expect." the writer said of the absence of the winged X-Forcer from the book's teaser and cover. He also said that they're looking for a natural way to expand the team membership. "While there are some new members coming up, I don't think people will see it coming."
The issue of Deadpool's role in that family/team dynamic and his recent deflection from pure joking mayhem addict was raised. "People who are constantly joking, it's something of a defense mechanism," said Remender. "When I get into the character, I start seeing a three-dimensional character...killing a kid for me was something he had an issue with. I know this sounds strange, but I do see a bit of vulnerability in Wade. He'd be the one who was up late at night."
An appearance by the Age of Apocalypse version of Nightcrawler came up. "There was more and more to be mined out of [this world]," the writer explained. "Beyond the high-paced version of it, there is a lot of drama here." Wolverine's relationship with the Age of Apocalypse version of Jean Grey and Nightcrawler, and the latter will be a much more violent and active character than fans might expect from Kurt Wagner as this version was raised in hell.
As for how the team makes it to the AoA world and why they go there, "
There is something in the Age of Apocalypse or someone in the Age of Apocalypse that they need for some reason. When you're dealing with dimension-hopping, one thing that is incredibly important is to find a way to make it significant," said the writer. "One thing we've spent a whole lot of time doing is that when we knew we had to go there for this mission, we also had to find a way for this to move the story forward.
"Once you see what the results are, they're long lasting. If the dimension-hopping happened too much, it wouldn't work well. It works best on a limited basis."
Continuity came up in terms of where this Age of Apocalypse story fits with previous trips to this world. "It's ten years after the 2005 series. It's been a while. The world has changed and not for the better. The person involved in it is a big deal, and [the mythology of] Apocalypse plays a major role...it puts our team in a tough spot because these are alternate version of their friends, but they've got their own mission as well." Remender added that Jean Grey's role as well as that of the Silver Samurai will help place what fans know of Age of Apocalypse.
Remender's new role as the revitalizer of '90s franchises like "X-Force" and "Venom" was discussed as he said that despite the fact he had moved on to mostly indie comics during the heyday of the '90s and stories like Age of Apocalypse "I was deeply, deeply in the scene when Venom hit and X-Force hit and Deathlok...those things are so incredibly iconic that when I was presented with the job, I immediately had a year's worth of stories. I didn't expect that to be the case, but it was."
As for art teams coming up in the book, three issues by Billy Tan will be followed by Mark Brooks for three AoA issues, and the Jerome Opeña comes back after that to be followed by Remender's recent collaborator Greg Tocchini.
Finally, the writer spoke about stories coming sooner including the appearance of Captain Britain in issue #6. Remender said that because Psylocke falls in a family where one brother is a shining superhero and the other a madman, those relationships were important for him to dig into. "One thing we're going to play with here is how she sees herself in contrast to her brothers," he said.

  • [大家開講之作者怎麼說]X-Men & Uncanny X-Force

Amongst the classic TV celebs, wrestlers and Star Trek cast members that populated the floor of this year's Wizard World Chicago Comic-Con, comics events, booths and talent also worked their way into the overall pop culture mix including one of the newest faces on the best-seller side of the superhero scene: Victor Gischler.
The crime novelist and Marvel Comics scribe saw his first sales chart-topping direct market book hit in July in the form of "X-Men" #1 – the only single issue to notch over 100,000 copies in sales estimates that month – which kick-started the heavily promoted "Curse of the Mutants" storyline.
CBR News caught up with Gischler on the show floor for his take on the sales success of his series and why it doesn't affect him too much, how he is approaching the building of a new X-Men book and team with the help of editorial and fan support, why Jubilee has become a lynchpin character for his story and who else will be playing a role as the war between mutants and vampires continues.
CBR News: Well, Victor, I suppose my first comment has to be "Congratulations!" "X-Men" debuted on the sales charts as #1 with over 100,000 copies sold. That must be a nice feeling.
Victor Gischler: It is! I've heard a few different numbers. I've heard some numbers that seemed pretty unlikely, but people told me that it did very well. A second printing with another variant cover is on the way. I don't think about that when I'm trying to sit down and work with the editors to write the very best story I can, but then later, when I hear the numbers, I'm glad.
Over the past year, Axel Alonso has been building up a push to bring X-Men back into the Marvel U. Part of that feels like a reaction to the idea that, over the past decade, "Avengers" has eclipsed "X-Men" as the biggest Marvel franchise. Do you see this book as a part of that rejoining of the two sides of Marvel in some way?
Well, I know that one of the things we want to do with the "X-Men" book is to get those characters interacting more with the rest of the Marvel U. That's the mission statement. We still want to preserve what it means to be and X-Man and be an X-Men book, but you know how it's been for the X-Men for a long time. They've been circling the wagons and fending off threats and fighting for their lives against extinction. This book is "Let's get a little bit more proactive. Let's get the X-Men out saving people and being heroes in a way that goes with the Marvel Universe." As far as the numbers [and who's at #1], we just want to make the best book we can. Obviously, Marvel headquarters wants to sell as many books as possible, but at my level as the writer, I'm just trying to figure out what the best story for readers is and create the best situation. One of the ways to do that is to get the X-Men out and interacting 9with the MArvel Universe] more.
In a recent interview, Axel stated that you and he and been talking for a long time about building up the vampire lore of the Marvel Universe without knowing how to fit that in, but then when the idea of the X-Men being the foil to that stuff came along, everything more or less took off.
It really was organic. It's like "Hey, we got a guy over here slicing bread, and that smells really good" and then on the other side of the room it's like, "Hey, we've got a guy over here with some really nice ham and cheese! Hey, wait a minute!" [Laughter] In hindsight, it was almost like "Duh! Of course, this has to all go together!" But for me, when we worked on "Death of Dracula," we worked hard not to just make it a good, fun story but to do something interesting with vampires in the Marvel Universe. I think – as happy as I am that "X-Men" is doing so well, and I am pleased – I think the big surprise pleasure of the year so far is when I was told "Death of Dracula" sold out very quickly. I had a lot of people come up to me and tell me, "Oh, 'Death of Dracula' was great!" That was really gratifying because we had a lot of people working hard on that book, and it was the spark that led to taking the vampires into the "X-Men" book. It was one of the highlights of my year.
Let's talk about the building blocks of the story in that sense. The one feeling I've got from the book so far is that while both of these species have things in common, there is a bit of a class war going on between them. The vampires are very old and aristocratic while the mutants are the young, upstart kids on the block. Is that something that you think about as you shape each side of the conflict?
A little. I think unconsciously, a little. But I think I've more focused on the similarities between the vampires and the mutants, and the reason is because when you focus on those similarities, the more you think, "Well, yeah, there are similarities, but come on! The vampires are the bad guys and the mutants are the good guys!" In a way, it has the reverse effect. Look how similar they are, but we really know who the good guys and bad guys are. That's been the strategy – the gut, reverse feeling.
"Uncanny" has become this X-Men book that's so much about involving all the mutant characters and this entire nation of people, and your series seems to be balancing that approach out a bit by utilizing a more controlled cast of players. How did you pick up who would feature strongly in the book? Was it a game of picking favorites from your past as a reader, or did you have to focus on who fits best with the story at hand more?
Part of it has to be "Who fits best?" This is the book that, since we're engaging the Marvel Universe, we want to bring in some people from the outside. It's like, "Hmmmm...we've got vampires. Okay. Blade is a no brainer." For instance, I'm already looking ahead for the next arc. I was going to take five X-Men on an adventure, but I've already pared that down to four. I just looked at the story and what was needed, and I went, "I would rather give four X-Men good focus than try to jam a fifth character in there and not give anybody their due in the book."
One of the things I was thinking about when I put together my team was that I wanted to take a close look at Gambit at the same time that people were whispering in my ear, "Hey - look at Gambit! What about Gambit?" So if I'm thinking about Gambit and there are all these people that want Gambit, it just feels right. That hits my gut feeling as a good choice. So when I'm thinking about who the team is going to be, there are a lot of factors that intersect: Who's right for the mission? Who do I think I can write well? Who do readers want to see? There's a lot to consider. Also, as someone who lives in Louisiana, I feel like Gambit's kind of a hometown pick. [Laughter] I was doing a signing at a store in Lafayette where they had me in, and people were like, "Are we going to see some more Gambit? He's the hometown boy!" I took great pleasure in going, "Oh, I think you'll see some more [of him]." So there's a whole lot that goes into that process, not the least of which is a whole editorial team saying, "What do you think about Gambit?" I've got Axel and the other guys going, "That's a good idea," or when I ask about another character going, "Well, she's kind of busy doing other stuff." There's a team effort in those decisions too.
As a reader, is there a specific era that you followed that you draw on when you write?
Honestly, I would say the bulk of my X-Men experience as a reader was in that Chris Claremont era. When I went off to college in the '90s, I got really distracted from comics because there was a lot of other stuff going on in my life, and there's a decade there where I'm really loose on my knowledge of "X-Men." So my gut feeling of who the X-Men are is not solely formed by the Claremont area, but it is significantly formed by the Claremont area. Then, when I got back into it and have been reading Matt Fraction's "Uncanny" I started to get a better feel for it, so I feel like I'm also getting a real modern sense of who the X-Men are as well. Even with the gap in there, I'm filling it in. I've got people telling me what I need to know, and I'm catching up and doing okay. But the first name off the top of my head when you ask a question like that is going to be "Chris Claremont."
The story in your book has had a few twists already even though we're two issues in. On the vampire side, we've seen that even though Dracula's been killed, he's not ever going to be a force that's completely out of the picture. How do the X-Men use that to their advantage?
I don't know. I know that we're still early in the arc, so right now the X-Men are looking at Hail Mary plays. "Oh my gosh, we've got thousands of vampires waiting to jump on our heads! Let's do something desperate!" As far as strategy goes, opportunities are going to arise and one of the things that makes Cyclops a good leader is that, even though he doesn't have a solid plan right now, in the very next minute he can see an opportunity and say, "There's an opening! I've got a plan now!" He's going to be able to exploit that opportunity when it arises. That's how things go over the next few issues.
Marvel just released a preview from issue #3 containing the scene people have been nervously anticipating since the teasers first came out: vampire Jubillee mixing it up with Wolverine. Is part of what it takes to make a vampire story good is to amp up a bit of that shock factor?
Yeah, I think so. First of all, let me say that no matter what you see in that preview, there's still a couple surprises left. We didn't shoot all of our bullets showing you that picture. There's more surprises and more opportunities for the X-Men to get their licks in coming up. But I've actually sort of fallen in love with writing Jubilee in this vampire arc. I'm a couple issues ahead of you guys, so I know what's going to happen. I've heard some hints about plans down the road, and it all points to Jubilee being a very, very interesting character, certainly in the next few issues of "X-Men," but maybe down the road as well. I feel like that moment is an "Oh $#!+" moment, but in the best possible way. People that aren't Jubilee fans are going to be Jubilee fans, and people who are already Jubilee fans are going to kick it up a notch and be double Jubilee fans, in my opinion.
One thing that really comes across in her thread in the story is a kind of teenage angst feeling that works so well for vampire stories in general. It plays off the zeitgeist in a way.
I tapped into my inner Joss Whedon. [Laughter]
The teenage stuff does strike strong with some readers. I think the most common question we've gotten for Cup O' Joe and the T&A column since issue #1 came out is whether or not more "Generation X" cast members are coming back, so I think you'll have fans working your ear a bit this fall.
I don't mind that. The fact is, the more people who are whispering whatever into my ear, mathematically the less I can listen to. I love hearing from readers. I take their comments seriously. The editors and the people at Marvel, though, are the ones who pay me, and I'm bringing all those ideas on character into it. So far I'm thrilled about how it's going. I don't want to say too much, but I think getting back to the teaser preview, that does its job. But there's more! Don't think you've seen it all!
You've got your latest novel, "The Deputy," that you're also promoting here at the show. Are you seeing any crossover between readers of your crime fiction and your superhero comics?
There is a little crossover, but I think what I'm hoping – if I could be selfish for a second to talk about this – is that there could be a little more crossover. Holy cow, if 10% of "X-Men" #1 go and buy my novel, that'd really make my publisher happy. I'm not kidding because the numbers are different with novels than they are with the comics. At least they are for me. With someone like J.K. Rowling, it's different, but those are two totally different worlds. But I have had people on Twitter or Facebook say, "Hey, I read your comics so I thought I'd try one of your novels" or vice versa. So that's been very gratifying, but I'd love to see more of it.
[I'm here with] "Crimespree Magazine" this weekend. I've got a panel and a couple of signings with them. The thing about that booth for Crimespree is that I know those guys, John and Jordan who publish the magazine. They called me up and asked me to come to this show because I hadn't planned to come to this convention. But they asked me to come up, and I thought, "These are good guys, I better do it" and I'm glad I did. I'm having fun, and this is a good con. I haven't been to a lot of cons, so I need to go out more and get the lay of the land.
